PAINTINGS & DRAWINGS OF INDIAN LIFE
I first started to visit India in the 1990s and each time I’ve gone back I’ve spent time in Kolkata. I continue to find this a vibrant city full of visual stimulation particularly at the time of the annual Durga Puja when every community makes its own festival pandal, or stage set, as the centre piece for the celebrations. It is the lively spirit of these creative people and their activities that I aim to portray in these paintings. Many are set in Kolkata but others capture my experiences in a village in Orissa and in Kalimpong and Darjeeling.
